Juan Carlos Quintero-Herencia (Santurce, Puerto Rico, 1963). Poet, essayist, critic. In 2002, he won the Puerto Rico Pen Club poetry prize for his early book El hilo para el marisco/Cuaderno de los envíos. He is the author of the poetry books La caja negra (The Black Box, 1996), Libro del sigiloso (Book of the Stealthy, Creative and Performing Arts Award from the University of Maryland, 2006), El cuerpo del milagro (The Body of the Miracle, 2016), and Minotauro en mar chiquita (Minotaur in the Small Sea, 2023). Some of his books of criticism are Fulguración del espacio: Letras e imaginario institucional de la Revolución cubana 1960-1971 (Association of Latin American Studies-Ibero-American Prize, 2002), La máquina de la salsa. Tránsitos del sabor (2005, 2021, second revised and expanded edition), La hoja de mar (:) Efecto archipiélago I (2016) and De la queda(era). Imagen, tiempo y detención en Puerto Rico (2021). He has received grants from the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He is a professor of Caribbean and Latin American literature and resides in Maryland, United States.
